This psalm was written after the exiles returned and the holy city was rebuilt. Because Israel had stubbornly rebelled against God and worshipped idols, God allowed His people to be taken captive by their enemies to Babylon. Jerusalem, the temple and their homeland were all destroyed and left desolate. In the difficult circumstances of being surrounded by powerful enemies and having everything to rebuild, God Himself sustained them and enabled them to complete the rebuilding of the city walls and the restoration of worship. Seeing God keep His covenant and show His steadfast love, the psalmist wrote this majestic song of praise, calling the people to recognise that whether it was the strengthening of the physical walls, the return of the scattered exiles, or the healing of their inner lives, everything came from God’s grace.

Often, what gradually draws us away from God is not only the enemy outside us, but also the old self within us that loves sin and allows sin to rule. Sin separates us from God, gradually breaks down our lives, and also gives the enemy an opening for temptation and attack. Therefore, God’s restoration is not only about changing our outward circumstances, but also about bringing His people to repentance from the heart, turning them back to Him, and restoring an intimate relationship with Him.

God not only visibly “builds up Jerusalem” and “gathers the exiles”, but also, in hidden places, “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”. On the one hand, He “determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name”; on the other, He “sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground”. This shows us that God is not only mighty in power, but also full of love and compassion. This perfectly foreshadows Jesus Christ—God’s ultimate restoration. He is the true builder of the temple, who became flesh and came to earth to seek and save the lost and scattered sheep. On the cross He bore our sins, healing those who are broken in spirit, brokenhearted and oppressed, and reconciling sinners to God; He rose from the dead so that those who belong to Him might receive new life.

Human pain comes from different sources. People often use busyness, entertainment or their own methods to cover their wounds and numb their pain. But covering a wound is not the same as healing it, and the passing of time does not mean that a life has truly been restored. God’s healing, however, is thorough and complete. It is not merely comfort, nor simply the removal of pain; through His Word He shines His light on us, enables us to recognise our sin, leads us to repent and receive His forgiveness, helps us let go of bitterness and self-reliance, teaches us to trust Him again, and brings our broken lives back to Himself. This healing is often accompanied by confession and repentance, as well as spiritual warfare against the power of sin and deeply rooted strongholds.

Today, we need to examine ourselves: Do I only want God to heal my wounds, while being unwilling to let Him touch the sin that caused those wounds? Are there still hurts and bitterness within me that I am unwilling to entrust to Him, or hidden sins that I am unwilling to repent of?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the God who builds, gathers and heals. You hate sin, yet You have compassion on sinners. You did not abandon Your rebellious, scattered and broken people. When the time came, You quickly showed them grace and brought them back to Yourself.

Through the history of the Israelites, help me to see and learn this lesson: Am I like the Israelites, wanting only blessings and wanting only You to change my circumstances, while not wanting to listen to Your Word, not wanting You to shine Your light into my heart, and being unwilling to receive Your correction and renewal,以至于走上一条被仇敌掳去的道路。until I end up walking down a path that leads into captivity by the enemy?

Through this psalm, please help me receive both instruction and comfort. Please reveal the sin within me so that I may truly repent, lay down bitterness, pride, rebellion and self-reliance, and trust in You again. 祢要借着基督使我们每一个失散的羊与祢和好,祢必重建、医治、恢复祢的教会,使其成为荣耀!I also pray for any brothers and sisters who have gone their own way and have temporarily been taken captive and scattered by the enemy. Please bring them back and let them know that You are waiting to comfort and heal them. Through Christ, You will reconcile every lost sheep among us to Yourself. You will rebuild, heal and restore Your Church and make her glorious!

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
