Psalm 142 is David’s cry to God while he is being hunted down. He is in distress, and the way ahead seems completely blocked, yet in prayer he declares that God is his refuge and his portion.
We often think that if God is our refuge, He should remove the danger; but what David holds on to is God Himself. A true refuge is not a place where there are no storms, but knowing that even in the middle of the storm, there is still a God we can run to.
The temptation in suffering is often not the circumstances themselves, but that when things feel out of control, we easily turn to other things for security. We hold on to money, our own ability, and relationships, thinking these will make us feel safe. When we lose the things we depend on, our hidden fears are exposed, and we begin to see what we have actually made our refuge.
David also had moments of weakness, but even before God changed his circumstances, he declared that God was his refuge. Even more deeply, David said, “You are my portion.” This means that what he wanted was not only the blessings from God’s hand, but God Himself. If we love only what God gives us, then when those blessings are taken away, our faith can also begin to shake; but if God Himself is our portion, then even when life remains difficult, we still have what is most precious.
In Christ, we see even more clearly what this refuge means. Jesus Himself entered into human suffering, bore our sins on the cross, experienced death, and then rose from the dead. He did not promise us a life where everything would go our way, but through the cross He brought us back to God. The greatest redemption is not simply that God brings us out of suffering, but that in Christ He brings us back to Himself, gives us Himself, and enables us to find true security in Him.
Prayer
Father, please shine Your light on me and help me see what I truly rely on. Forgive me for so often building my sense of security on people and things other than You, instead of finding my satisfaction in You Yourself.
When my way seems blocked and my prayers have not yet been answered, please keep me from turning to other things for security, and draw me back to You. Help me to keep trusting You in the storm, to remain patient and persevere while I wait, and when I cannot see a way forward, still hold firmly to this truth: You are my refuge.
Thank You for making it possible for me to return to You through Christ. Father, please help me not only to love Your gifts, but to love the Lord who gives them; not to make changing circumstances the foundation of my peace, but to make Christ my eternal security.
Even if the storm has not yet stopped, I will still take refuge in You; even if I lose many things, I still have You. For You are my refuge, and You are my portion.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
