Psalm 139 shows us David’s deep knowledge of God. As he reflects on God’s omniscience and omnipresence, he comes to see that his life has been under God’s creation and care from the very beginning, and this leads him to heartfelt thanksgiving. He says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Before he was fully formed and before he was born, God was already creating him in secret and watching over him.

David experienced being hunted down, fleeing for his life, and suffering. He also experienced sin, failure, and God’s discipline. Yet he still gave thanks to God, because his faith was not based on his own performance or on whether his circumstances were going well, but on who God is and how wonderful His works are. When he saw that his life had been in God’s hands from the very beginning, he no longer measured his life simply by his successes and failures, but began to understand himself from the perspective of his Creator.

He praises the Lord: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” What is most moving here is, “I know that full well.” Even when his circumstances were difficult, and even when he still had weaknesses and things he did not understand, deep within his heart he continued to believe that God was trustworthy. When this conviction entered deeply into his life, thanksgiving was no longer something expressed only in favourable circumstances. In every situation, his heart remained steadfast, knowing deeply that God surely had wonderful works and purposes for his life, and so he offered thanksgiving and worship to God.

When I look at myself, however, I often find that I am used to comparing myself with others: Why am I not as capable as others? Why do I have this kind of personality? Why have I gone through these hurts and setbacks? At times, I even find it difficult to accept my own past. David’s praise shines like a light upon me—it helps me realise that every one of us is God’s unique creation. God created me, and He has His good purposes for my life. He has also given me unique gifts and a calling. I do not need to struggle with either inferiority or pride; I simply need to rest with gratitude in the way He has created me and fulfil the calling He has given me.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father:

Please forgive me for so often judging myself by the standards of the world and measuring my life by my own successes and failures. Holy Spirit, please open my heart so that I will not only know in my mind that I was created by You, but also believe deep within my heart that You know me, care for me, and are willing to continue shaping me. Please remove the pride, inferiority, and desire to prove myself that are within me, so that I will neither exalt myself nor look down on myself, but instead entrust my life into Your hands with reverence.

Thank You for making me a part of the body of Christ, the Church. Holy Spirit, please teach me to see myself and others through God’s eyes, and to learn in Christ to accept, repent, and grow. Your care for me has never been because I have performed well enough, but because I am a member of the body of Christ. I have strengths and I have weaknesses; but in the body of Christ, all the members are joined together and support one another, each part doing its work, building one another up and being built up in love.

Lord, this helps me understand even more deeply that every one of us, as members of Your body, is fearfully and wonderfully made by You! I will continually give thanks to You and praise You!

In the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
