Psalm 138 is a psalm of praise written by David, full of thanksgiving and faith. This verse could be seen as a summary of what he experienced throughout his life. After going through battles, fleeing for his life, betrayal, and victory, he made this declaration of faith: “The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me.”

David did not say, “God will accomplish everything I have planned,” but rather, “His purpose for me.” He could have this confidence because he humbly understood that it was not because he himself was so important, but because what concerned him was part of God’s greater plan of salvation. His concerns were God’s concerns, and God would see His work through to the end. Here, “fulfill” does not mean that God follows our selfish desires, timetable, and methods, making everything work out the way we want; rather, it means that God completes His will in us and accomplishes the purpose He has determined.

David also held firmly to another truth in this verse: God’s love endures forever. David knew very well that he was not perfect; he too had sinned, fallen, and been weak. If God’s work of fulfilling His purpose had depended on David’s perfect performance, he would have lost hope long ago. That is why he based his faith entirely on God’s unchanging love and faithfulness. God fulfills His purpose for us not because our performance is good enough, but because His love endures forever.

From being anointed in Bethlehem, to fleeing in the wilderness and being displaced by internal conflict, and finally becoming king in Jerusalem, God’s way and purpose in fulfilling His work in David were not to give him a life without hardship, but to train and shape David through suffering, making him a man truly after God’s own heart. Just as Philippians 1:6 NIV promises: “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” God’s work may not happen according to our timing or fit our expectations, but the work He has begun in our lives will not be left unfinished because of our weakness, delays, or the difficulties we are facing now.

Finally, David prayed: “do not abandon the works of your hands.” He did not stop praying because he believed God would fulfill His purpose; instead, he prayed even more earnestly that God would not abandon him or let go of him. This is the prayer of someone who humbly depends on God and holds tightly to His love. Isaiah 64:8 NIV says: “Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” When we acknowledge that we are clay in His hands, although being shaped may involve trials and pain, we will never be abandoned by God.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for choosing me and allowing me to have a part in Your great plan of salvation. Today, I once again place everything concerning me into Your hands. Although at times I cannot see clearly what lies ahead, and I do not understand why some things have still not come to pass, please give me faith. Help me not to judge by what I can see, or to lose the heart to follow You because I have had to wait.

As I come before You again this morning, I reflect on David’s journey. Was not everything in David’s life within Your plan? Your love endures forever, and Your plan for my life will never be interrupted because of my weakness or failures. Please do not let go of me, because I am the work of Your hands. Since You have begun a good work in my life, You will carry it on to completion! Please continue to protect, guide, and prune me, so that in everything I go through I may see Your hand and understand Your will. May what You accomplish in me be not what I expect, but what You have purposed!

Lord, please also hear my cry and watch over those brothers and sisters who are struggling through weakness and trials. Please do not give up the work You are doing in them. May every one of Your children come to know more deeply Your love that endures forever!

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
