Psalm 145 praises God as King. The psalmist does not praise God only for the grace he himself has received, but also declares that God’s works and His kingdom are to be made known to everyone. God’s grace is not simply about us receiving blessings; rather, through His mighty acts, He makes known His everlasting kingdom and reveals that this King who rules over all things reigns forever. Grace ultimately points to God Himself and His eternal purpose: God brings people into His kingdom, and He will dwell with them for ever and ever.

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.” Earthly powers rise and fall, human plans change, wealth passes away, and our lives on earth come to an end; but God’s kingdom can never be shaken. Our true security is not found in whether the world goes the way we want it to, but in the fact that we belong to a kingdom that can never be taken away.

Yet we often want to build our own “kingdom”, with ourselves as king: my voice needs to be heard, and things need to go my way. We may acknowledge with our mouths that God is King, while in our hearts we still want to be in charge. Our deepest weakness is often not a lack of ability, but our fear of losing control and our unwillingness to let go and allow God to reign.

Even in prayer, we can try to control God and make everything revolve around what we want: “God, You need to help me with this and that; God, You need to sort out this problem and that problem”... When God answers according to our expectations, we thank Him; when answers to prayer are delayed and circumstances become difficult, we begin to doubt. But this passage shifts our focus from “what I want” to “God’s kingdom”. God’s kingdom is not centred on us as individuals; it reveals His will and His kingship, so that people may come to know the goodness of this eternal King.

我们跟随基督意味着主权的转换:不再问“神怎样成就我的计划”,而是问:“主啊,祢怎样借着我的生命彰显祢的国?”Following Christ means a transfer of sovereignty: instead of asking, “How will God fulfil my plans?” we begin to ask, “Lord, how will You reveal Your kingdom through my life?” Our work, family, ministry and every choice we make are no longer simply about building something for ourselves, but about allowing others to see Christ and His kingdom.

In Christ, we see God’s kingdom revealed even more clearly. Jesus proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of heaven, declared the principles of God’s kingdom, healed the sick and drove out demons, showing people the power of His heavenly kingdom. Finally, on the cross He bore the sins of humanity, and through His resurrection He conquered death, revealing that He is the King who has truly defeated the kingdom of darkness and truly reigns. (徒26:18) Through miracles and healing He opens our eyes, and through redemption He also brings those who belong to Him “from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God”, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified, entering the kingdom of light of God’s beloved Son and sharing in the inheritance with all God’s holy people. (Acts 26:18 NIV)

Therefore, we do not need to prove anything through our own strength, and we do not need to lose hope because the world is unstable. Our mission is not to build our own kingdom, but to be faithful to what God has entrusted to us wherever He has placed us, so that through our lives and ministry, people may see Christ and His kingdom.

Prayer

Father, Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures through all generations. Please forgive me for so often putting my own plans, needs and glory ahead of Your kingdom, acknowledging with my mouth that You are King while still wanting to be in charge in my heart. Thank You for bringing me into Your eternal kingdom through Christ. Please help me to surrender to You in every choice I make, no longer insisting on being in control, but becoming a witness to Your kingdom.

Please change the way I see, so that I do not focus only on what You can do for me, but long more deeply to know You and glorify You, so that through my daily life and the way I live, people may see You and the glorious splendour of Your kingdom.

Father, may I live my whole life not to rule over my own little kingdom, but for Christ alone; may I not seek to build my own name, but only that all people may know of Your mighty acts and see the glorious splendour of Your kingdom.

In the name of Christ, I pray. Amen.
